El Brujo & Events of the Week

Monday, May 16th, was our P-day.  The Gonzales family from the temple wanted to pick us up in their taxi and take us on a road trip.  We have seen many of the sites around Trujillo so they decided to drive us 1 1/2 hours north to the ruins of El Brujo.

Huaca El Brujo was built by the Moche sometime between AD 1 and 600.  They have discovered many mural paintings and in 2006 they discovered Señora de Cao, the first known governess in Peru.

On the way to the site we stopped in Milagro to take pictures of the church.  It is on the Pan American Highway and is home to one branch.  We have never visited this building because it is about 45 minutes from us and they meet at 8:00 AM.  We would like to go there if we ever wake up early on a Sunday morning.

A man working on the grounds took our picture with the Gonzales family.
Mariana is 9 years old and will be 10 next month.

You have to drive through the little town of Magdalena de Cao to get to the ruins.

The Plaza de Armas.

A teeny, tiny dog near the Plaza.
We stopped at this gift shop in the town.

These next three pictures show the remains of Señora del Cao and the things they discovered with her in the tomb.  They have them on display in the museum but you can't take pictures.  She was only about 4'10" and died at age 25, they believe in childbirth.

El Brujo is on a hill with the sugar cane fields on one side and the ocean on the other.

Pictures from the drive home.  When we got back to Trujillo, we went to their home where they fixed us lunch before taking us back to our apartment.  They are are nice family.  Both parents work in the temple and Hermano Gonzales drives this taxi for a living.  They wouldn't let us pay them anything for the trip or gas.  The people here are very kind and generous and love to spend time with the missionaries.  We had a great day!

Since the weather has gotten cooler, we have started taking more walks. There are always  Kodak moments wherever you go in this city.  Here are some more.

Thursday, May 19th was our granddaughter Ellie's, 11th birthday.  We called and talked with her when she go home from school.  Her full name is Ellie Michele Stephenson and both Bill and I were present when she was born.  She is a super cute, talented and smart young girl. She has lots of personality and there is never a dull moment when she is around.  We love you Ellie and hope you had a super birthday.

With her big brother, Micah.
