Huaca del Sol y de la Luna

Today we went to see Huaca del Sol y de la Luna.  Huacas are commonly located in nearly all regions of Peru, in correlation with the regions populated by the pre-Inca and early Inca civilizations. It represents something revered; a temple, a sacred place or a cemetery.

Huaca del Sol y de la Luna are the Temples of the Sun and the Moon.  They are more than 700 years older than Chan Chan which is older than Machu Picchu and are from the Moche period.

The Huaca del Sol is the largest pre-Columbian structure in Peru but is not currently open to visitation as research continues on the site.

The Huaca de la Luna is about 500 meters away from del Sol, across the open desert.  It has rooms that contain ceramics, precious metals and figures.

This is what you see from the top of the Huaca de la Luna.  It is like an oasis in the desert.
This is where you start your tour.  Souvenir shops, food, etc can be found down there.

A few odds and ends......................

This cute little fella can be seen on the way to the Huacas.
He represents the Moche Civilization from that period.
My flowers this week. They cost 5 soles or $1.55.

It is always fun to go to the mall.

And who could resist chicken hearts, chicken feet and chicken heads
in the meat department at Tottus.

One week ago today, the Guzmans had their baby.  He weighed 8 pounds and they named him Juan Esmaro Guzman Lozano.  Of course we had to go see him.

Baby Juan with Grandma, Mom & Dad.
It was after 8:00 PM, after a long day at the temple on Friday when we were
able to make our visit.  Dad is a Bishop so Friday was the best night for them.
Grandma served grape juice and sweet bread.  Mom speaks very good English
so it was a fun evening with the Guzman family.

And last, but definitely not least, I have to post a picture of my mother.  Today would be her 90th birthday.  I do not have access to all my pictures here in Peru, but I found this one of her in 2008 with my cute niece Amber.  I miss her every day.  We lived next door to her the last 8 years of her life.  We talked and saw each other every day. Happy Birthday, Mother!  We all love you and miss you.
