Election in Peru & This and That

The run-off election for the new President of Peru was held on Sunday, June 5th. On Election Day it is against the law to hold any public meetings until the polls are closed, so we did not have church on Sunday. They even closed the temple in the afternoon on Saturday so patrons and workers would have time to travel to their voting city, kind of like Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem to pay their taxes.

It was a tight race between Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a 77-year-old former American citizen and Keiko Fujimori, the 41-year-old daughter of a disgraced and imprirsoned former Peruvian president.

As I am writing this five days after the election, the results still aren't official, but it appears that Kuczynski is on the verge to win in one of the closest elections in the history of Peru.

Kaczynski is winning by a bare majority of votes - 50.12%  over Fujimori with 49.87% of the votes.   That is just 39,000 out of 18 million votes.

On Monday, for P-day, we went to lunch with the Hawses and Fackrells and then back to the Hawses apartment to play Bingo.  We had no prizes but had fun anyway.  The Fackrells are going home in about 3 weeks.  We will miss them but they live in Bountiful so maybe we will see them from time to time.

Is this what Senior missionaries do on P-Day?
While we were still at the mall we ran into the Marlers and lots of missionaries.

Sister Marler talking with Sister Olson (in the middle), our mission nurse.
Sister Olson is from Canada.

Of course there is always time for a little shopping.
You just gotta love all these missionaries.

Last week we were asked by President Marler to help out in the mission office one day a week.  It was approved by President Casos and Salt Lake, so now we now go every Thursday to help out with various tasks.  We still work in the temple the other four days.
This is Eric (in turquoise tie) with his twin sons and Bill.
He lives in Ecuador with his family and has been to the temple several times.
We ran into him on our way to the mission offices.  He is traveling with his sons
right now and they are going to go to 8 temples in South America.  They were
here to do baptisms.

Bill with Elder Marshall from Hyde Park, Utah.  He goes home on July 11th.
He knows lots of the youth from our ward in North Logan.  He has been an
Assistant to the President for 10 months but was made a Zone Leader for his
last transfer.  He is a great young man.

As we were walking this week we found this cute little pet store and nursery.

When walking in Peru, you always keep your eyes on the the path ahead of you.  There are many holes and broken sidewalks that could easily ruin you day if you stepped in them.  Even manmade holes that are supposed to have covers, do not and this one has even become a trash receptacle.

Back home in Utah, Heather biked the Little Red in Lewiston for 50 miles with 3 of her friends. She is the one with the red helmut.

On Sunday, June 5th our 6th grandchild celebrated his 8th birthday.  Moses Decker Hartman was born in Arizona but now lives with his family in Missouri.  He has always been such a cutie with his blond hair and blue eyes.  We were able to talk with him on the phone and he was excited about his new birthday toys.  He is the middle child of 9 children and holds his own among his siblings.  We sure do love this little guy.  He is best buds with his older brother Brigham.

This was kind of a small post so I think I can make room for another Pickles comic strip.
Laughter is always good for the soul.
